Woman Says Jets Fans Beat Her for Patriots Jersey

NEWARK, N.J. (CN) - Unruly New York Jets fans attacked a woman during a football game because her daughter was wearing a jersey of the rival New England Patriots, the woman claims in Federal Court. She says stadium security did nothing to prevent the assault.

Michelle Munoz and her family were in the stands at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., for the Sept. 20, 2009 game between the Patriots and Jets.

She says security personnel in her section ignored her complaints about the threatening behavior, including verbal taunts, displayed by some of the home fans sitting near her family.

"Near the end of the football game, Jets fans physically attacked, assaulted and battered Michelle, beating her up and throwing her to the ground causing her to suffer injuries to her cervical spine, among other things," the lawsuit states.

Security "ignored Michelle's family complaints concerning the behavior and fear for their safety, and refused to provide any help and assistance in protecting her from imminent violence against her because of the fact that her daughter Danielle was wearing a Patriots jersey," according to the lawsuit.

New York beat its AFC East rival 16-9.

Jets head coach Rex Ryan said the fans were "huge" in the victory, even giving the fans a game ball that would be placed in the team's trophy case, according to Sports Illustrated.

Michelle and Randy Munoz are suing New York Football Giants and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority for negligence.

They are represented by Evan M. Foulke in Wyckoff, N.J.
