Woman Says Equidata Cost Her A Job

NEWPORT NEWS, VA. (CN) - A woman claims she lost the opportunity to work in the Hampton University library because Equidata published a background check that falsely pegged her as a criminal.

Equidata reported that Patricia Wheeler had been convicted of trespass and "assault by threat," Wheeler claims in Newport News Circuit Court. Wheeler says the university withdrew its job offer based on the inaccurate background check, causing her to suffer "humiliation, embarrassment, vilification, exposure to public infamy, disgrace, injury to her reputation and feelings" and loss of the library assistant job.

She wants the company to pay $1 million in actual and punitive damages. She is represented by Reid H. Ervin & Associates. See complaint.
