Woman Learns The Hard Way Not To Lie In Court

ST. LOUIS - A federal judge doubled the prison time for an embezzler who lied to court workers about her finances. Judge Rodney Sippel increased Angela Smiley's sentence from three to six years. Smiley, 42, embezzled $1 million from churches and businesses - clients of her tax service.

She used the money to pay her own taxes and spent it on herself. Since her January sentencing, prosecutors say Smiley failed to tell probation officers about a house she owned in Florida, lied about her ability to pay restitution, and lied that she was separated from her husband. Smiley's lawyer claims Sippel lost jurisdiction to re-sentence Smiley after seven days; he said he will appeal to the 8th Circuit.
