Woman Gets $2.1 Million For Claim She|Was Not Made Judge Because She’s White

PLATTE CITY, Mo. (CN) - A Platte County jury awarded $2.1 million to a woman who claimed she was passed over for a Kansas City judgeship because she's white. Melissa Howard, a Clay County assistant prosecutor, said Kansas City officials wanted to fill the position with a racial minority.

Howard was one of three female finalists.

Kansas City officials said they will appeal the ruling. City attorney Galen Beaufort told the Associated Press that the state law upon which Howard based her claim does not apply to appointed officials such as judges.
