Woman Convicted |for Overseas Attack

MANHATTAN (CN) - A federal jury on Wednesday convicted a 37-year-old woman of trying to murder and assault U.S. officials in Afghanistan. Aafia Siddiqui, who attended school in Boston, grabbed a U.S. Army officer's M-14 while she was being interrogated in July 2008 and shot it at another officer in Ghazni, Afghanistan.

The jury convicted her after a 14-day trial. Afghan officials arrested her on July 17, 2008, and claimed she had notes about committing terrorist acts against the United States.

The next day, she grabbed the rifle and shot it while being interrogated by the Army and the FBI, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. She took classes in firearms while she was a student in Boston, prosecutors said.

Siddiqui faces up to life in prison at her May 6 sentencing. She was convicted of attempted murder and assault, firearms charges and assault.
