Woman Basketball Ref Sues Association

TRENTON, N.J. (CN) - The International Association of Approved Basketball Officials discriminated against her repeatedly because she is a woman, Tamika Covington claims in Federal Court.

For instance, Covington claims the Association fined her $96 for being 20 minutes late to a high school game, but fined a male official only $15 for being 80 minutes late to a game a month later. She claims the IAABO won't assign women to referee boys varsity games, but assigns men to referee varsity girls games, and does this because referees for varsity games are paid more than JV refs.

She claims the IAABO discriminates in hiring - that 190 of its 200 members are male. And she claims the IAABO retaliated against her for her complaints of this bias, by pulling her from games, defaming her, denying her work, locking her out of the IAABO Web site, and in other ways. She demands punitive damages for discrimination, retaliation, defamation, breach of contract and other charges. She is represented by Ty Hyderally of Montclair, N.J.
