Woman Accused of Embezzling From School

SAN FRANCISCO (CN) - A 52-year-old Bay Area woman was arrested and charged with embezzling $180,000 from a high school parent volunteer committee, the San Francisco district attorney said Tuesday.

Cynthia Mauer, of Pacifica, is charged with six felony counts of grand theft and six felony counts of embezzlement, District Attorney George Gascón said. She allegedly drained the money from the St. Ignatius High School Grad Night committee, September 2007 and February 2012.

Mauer was a co-chair of the committee and controlled its bank account, according to Gascón's office. St. Ignatius is a private Catholic high school in San Francisco.

The school's insurance company filed a subrogation complaint against Mauer on March 28. It claims Mauer wrote checks to her personal bank account from money intended for the school's annual senior party, and "actively misrepresented and concealed the fact that she was stealing, embezzling and withdrawing money from Saint Ignatius' Grad Night account." According to the civil complaint, Mauer stole roughly $250,000.

"It's alarming that someone would steal money that was raised to benefit high school students," Gascón said in a statement. "A lot of effort was poured into raising this money. She betrayed the students and a community that trusted her."

Mauer is out of custody on $200,000 bail and is due in court on June 8.
