LOS ANGELES (CN) - State Farm claims Yorba Linda Water District's inadequate water system allowed a wildfire to destroy policyholders' houses in the November 2008 Hidden Hills fire in Yorba Linda. Two hundred and forty homes were burned, at least 12 of them insured by State Farm, according to the Superior Court complaint.
State Farm says that had the city maintained its water pumping system with sufficient water pressure, Orange County firefighters would not have abandoned efforts to protect the 240 homes in Hidden Hills.
In an interview, attorney Gary Hamblet said that two people previously sued the water district for damages from the fire. Aside from asserting that "probably more complaints will be filed," Hamblet declined to comment further, though he added that he expected the water district will "probably be claiming immunity."
State Farm demands compensation for losses and living expenses for their policyholders. It is represented by Hamblet with Morris Polich.
