White Supremacist Accused of Mailing Noose

PORTLAND, Ore. (CN) - A Portland white supremacist has been arrested and indicted for allegedly mailing a hangman's noose to the president of the Lima, Ohio, chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Justice Department announced Thursday.

Daniel Lee Jones was the regional director of a group that advocated white supremacy when he allegedly sent the noose to threaten and intimidate Jason Upthegrove, president of Lima's NAACP chapter, the department said in a news release.

Upthegrove had been speaking out at community meetings for equal police services for blacks and against the hate literature Jones allegedly distributed to Lima residents, according to the release.

"Mailing a noose to an individual who advocates for racial equality sends a clear threat of violence," said Thomas E. Perez, assistant attorney general for the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division.

The department claims Upthegrove received the package Feb. 14, 2008, through the U.S. Postal Service.

Jones, 32, is charged with mailing a threatening communication and interfering with federally protected activities. He faces up to six years in prison and $350,000 in fines if found guilty on both counts.
