MANHATTAN (CN) - A concert promoter waltzed with $180,000 he was supposed to pay rappers Gucci Mane, OJ da Juiceman and Nicki Minaj to book them for the 2009 "Icey City Tour," a talent agency claims in court.
Ujaama Talent Agency sued Shannon Marshall and The Muzic Group, both of Columbia, S.C., in New York County Supreme Court.
The rappers are not parties to the lawsuit.
Ujaama claims in the lawsuit that the defendants signed agreements with several promoters for a tour that was to stop at several large clubs and outdoor festivals in the summer of 2009.
Ujaama, acting as an agent on behalf of the artists, says it wired $180,000 to the promoters, expecting it to be transferred to the artists as a deposit to secure their performances.
However, the complaint states: "Shannon Marshall, individually, and as an officer and agent of The Muzic Group LLC, failed to transfer the monies to the appropriate artists and a result, none of the artists performed in the following cities of the Tour: Jacksonville, Orlando and Pompano Beach, Florida; Oregon, Wisconsin [sic]; Chicago, Illinois; Detroit, Michigan; and Baltimore, Maryland."
Ujaama says it demanded return of the money, but the defendants have failed and refused.
It wants the money back and damages for conversion, breach of contract, fraudulent misrepresentation, and unjust enrichment.
