Whale Songs Interrupted

WASHINGTON (CN) - The largest shipyard in Alaska, the Port of Anchorage, is engaged in a massive expansion of its facilities and is asking permission from the National Marine Fisheries Association to use explosives and underwater pile driving to destroy old, and build new, ship berths. At least two kinds of whale, the beluga and Orca are found in the Cook Inlet where the port expansion is taking place.

Potential harassment of the whales would include exposure to acoustic noise upward of 125 decibels for over 760 hours of construction.
