(CN) - A candidate for the West Virginia senate claims in court that a political action committee defamed him by running radio ads that claimed he endorses child molestation.
Christopher Walters is a Republican running for re-election in West Virginia's eighth senatorial district.
In a complaint filed in the Kanawha County Circuit Court, Walters says defendant West Virginia Family Values, a group that, according to its website, advocates for public policy from Christian worldview, targeted with radio ads that falsely stated he testified in court on behalf of a convicted child molester.
The spots ran on defendant KATZ radio, and Walters says despite his having an attorney send a cease and desist letter to the station, it continued to run the offending advertisements.
Walters says he has suffered irreparable damage to his reputation, community standing, and business affairs due to the defendants' actions.
He seeks compensatory and punitive damages as well as injunctive relief.
Walters is represented by Charles Webb of Charleston, West Virginia.
