Weatherized Units Get Limited Rent Increases

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Department of Energy will limit the rent increases for apartments that have been protected against cold weather under the Weatherization Assistance Program.

In addition to direct subsidies, the Department of Energy also funds weatherization programs through the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Department of Agriculture.

The goal of the program is to make sure that the cost benefits of weatherization go to occupants of apartments who pay their energy costs through their rent. Without the rent control, a reduction in energy costs would be pocketed by the landlord rather than the tenant.

To qualify for the weatherization program, and the rent control restrictions, tenants must have income less than 200 percent of the poverty line.
