Wal-Mart to Pay $40M |to Settle Wage Claims

(CN) - Wal-Mart agreed to pay $40 million to Massachusetts employees in the largest wage and hour class-action settlement in state history.

Wal-Mart will make payments of between $400 and $2,500 to as many as 87,500 of its current and former employees in the state. The settlement covers employees who worked for the retailer between August 1995 and 2005. On average, the employees will receive a check for $734.

The settlement is in response to a 2001 class action filed by two former employees, who accused the mega-retailer of skimping on employee breaks and overtime pay and fudging timesheets to reduce hours worked.

The agreement was filed in Middlesex Superior Court.
