Wackenhut Accused in Grisly 1979 Murder

DETROIT (CN) - Wackenhut security guards gang raped and strangled to death a motel clerk in 1979 while the guards were protecting Chemtron Corp. property during a labor strike, the woman's family claims in Federal Court. The family says the rapes and murder were watched by 15 to 20 people, and that Holland, Mich., police reopened the investigation in 2004, and eventually charged, and convicted, six people of her murder.

Janet Chandler worked at the Blue Mill Inn motel in Holland, Mich., where the Wackenhut workers were staying, her family claims. Six people - five Wackenhut employees and a motel worker - were convicted or pleaded guilty to murder charges in 2006 and 2007, the family says.

The family demands punitive damages from Wackenhut. They are represented by David Cooper of Tecumseh, Mich.
