Voters Say Little Rock’s Election System Dilutes Minority Votes

LITTLE ROCK (CN) - Hispanic voters in Little Rock, Ark., claim the city's method of electing the mayor and board of directors dilutes minority votes.

The present system concentrates the 50 percent minority community into three wards, instead of the 10 wards they would get if the boundaries were apportioned correctly, plaintiffs claim in Federal Court.

They want the Pulaski County Election Commission to create 10 single-member election districts with 19,000 residents each, redraw the district boundaries to comply with the Voting Rights Act and hold elections on a "one man one vote" basis.
