MANHATTAN (CN) - After extradition from Israel, six men were sentenced to 3 to 9 years in prison for stealing $2 million from old people in a telemarketing scam.
The six crooks told people they had won lottery prizes but had to pay fees and taxes. But there were no prizes. The crooks bought the names of their victims from brokers who sold names and contact information of people who subscribed to sweepstakes lotteries, federal prosecutors said.
Guy Mayo was sentenced to 9 years in prison; Elad Mayo to 6 years and 6 months; Asi Almakias to 6 years; Lior Orgad to 5 years and 6 months; Mor Galanti to 3 years and 1 month; and David Yamin to 33 months. They also were ordered to cough up $1.9 million.
A seventh defendant, Yaniv Kalbers, will be sentenced on July 25.
