VA Finds POWs Prone to Osteoporosis

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Department of Veterans Affairs now will presume there is a service connection between osteoporosis and former Prisoners of War who were detained or interned for at least 30 days and whose osteoporosis is at least 10 percent disabling.

The amendment implements a decision by the VA's Secretary to establish this presumption based on scientific studies.

Under an amendment reflecting provisions of the Veterans' Benefits Improvement Act of 2008, if the veteran's diagnosis includes posttraumatic stress disorder the presumption of service connection is for POWs who were detained or interned for any period of time.
