USCG Plans to Allow|Haz Waste Containers

WASHINGTON (CN) - The U.S. Coast Guard wants to add four types of portable storage containers to its list of containers approved to move hazardous waste from offshore oil and gas platforms.

New rules proposed by the Coast Guard would also expand the list of materials that can be transported in portable containers by service ships, to reduce the need for individual permitting for material that has not been pre-approved.

Specifically, the Coast Guard proposes to allow transportation of liquid nitrogen in portable tanks.

The public has until May to comment on the proposal to allow IMO Type 1 or IMO Type 2 portable tanks, UN portable tanks, or Intermediate Bulk Containers, to transport hazardous waste.
