US Seeking Death in Church-Shooting Case

(CN) - The Justice Department on Tuesday announced it will seek the death penalty for accused church shooter Dylann Roof in South Carolina.

In a written statement, Attorney General Loretta Lynch said " The nature of the alleged crime and the resulting harm compelled this decision."

Roof is accused of slipping into a bible study class at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in downtown Charleston on June 17, 2015, and after an hour, pulling a gun and killing nine parishioners, including pastor Clementa Pinckney, who was also a South Carolina state senator.

No date has been set for his federal trial. Roof also faces state murder charges, for which he is currently scheduled to be tried on Jan. 17, 2017.

Ninth Circuit Solicitor Scarlett Wilson is also seeking the death penalty for Roof.
