US Says It Won’t Adopt Protectionist Policies

WASHINGTON (CN) - The United States will not adopt protectionist policies in its dealings with the Americas, Commerce Secretary Gary Locke told the Americas Competitiveness Forum in Santiago, Chile on Monday. He urged other nations to maintain open markets, despite an economic downturn that may drive some to close down trade.

"The United States is committed to resisting the protectionist temptation because protectionism simply does not work," Locke said. "I came to Chile this week to affirm that the Obama Administration will be your strongest ally in your efforts to revive economic growth in the Americas."

The forum, the third of its kind, runs through Wednesday.

Leaders from American nations are expected to discuss energy and the environment, financing in times of crisis, increasing the value of supply chains, entrepreneurship and workforce development.
