US Says Atlas Air Flew ‘Unairworthy’ 747

MANHATTAN (CN) - Atlas Air allowed a Boeing 747 to make 18 flights with a cracked engine exhaust nozzle cowl, Uncle Sam says in Federal Court. Prosecutors say an FAA inspector showed Atlas the 2- to 3-inch crack on May 26, 2006. FAA regulations require the part to be replaced if a crack is larger than 1 inch, but Atlas just welded it and flew it 18 more times until it cracked again, the USA claims. It demands $11,000 per violation.
