Union Bosses Plead Guilty to Shakedowns

MANHATTAN (CN) - Two former executive board members of Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Workers Union pleaded guilty Thursday to conspiring to extort money for decades from owners of school bus companies. Local 1181, which represents 15,000 bus drivers and workers, was controlled by the Genovese crime family "from at least the 1980s through 2006," federal prosecutors said.

Nick Maddalone, 54, of Staten Island, and Paul Maddalone, 60, of Neponsit, N.Y., face up to 20 years in prison for extortion conspiracy at their Dec. 14 sentencing, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. They are the fourth and fifth Local 1181 officials to be convicted in the federal investigation.

"Nick and Paul Maddalone used their high-ranking union status and organized crime ties to shake down bus company owners who transported the city's children," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in announcing the pleas.
