Union Boss Gets 6 Years for Fraud

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (CN) - Convicted of 106 counts of fraud, a 65-year-old employee of White Sands Missile Range was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison for boosting $143,450 from several unions.

A federal jury last year convicted Gloria Porter, of Chaparral, N.M., of 105 counts of wire fraud, one count of mail fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. She was ordered to pay $143,457.50 in restitution.

Evidence showed that from Dec. 20, 2005, through Sept. 2, 2008, Porter ripped off the Army Military Council, a group of local unions representing members of the National Federation of Federal Employees who work for the U.S. Army.

Porter at the time was national vice president of the NFFE, secretary-treasurer of the AMC, and president of a local union.

Prosecutors say she stole $124,756 from AMC accounts and spent it on clothing, beauty and personal care, groceries, electronics, music and books, the home shopping network, and home furnishings.

Bank records also indicate Porter made cash withdrawals and wrote checks to herself from union funds in the amount of $24,619, prosecutors said.

Porter forged the signature of the AMC president on a 2006 fiscal disclosure report to hide the fraud, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.
