KANSAS CITY, Kan. (CN) - A severely injured man says he got the cold shoulder from University of Kansas Hospital when it found he didn't have insurance. Daryl Bryant says a doctor told him to go back to Missouri for a doctor, and a nurse unhooked him from an IV and monitoring machines and sent him in scrubs, shoeless and without socks, to wait for his wife.
Daryl Bryant, of Missouri, was airlifted to University of Kansas Hospital after falling from a ladder, he says in his federal complaint. Bryant suffered a severe laceration of his wrist with injuries to his arteries, tendons and nerves.
Bryant says a doctor at the UK Hospital told him he needed a surgery that would cost $15,000. Bryant says that when told the doctor he didn't have $15,000, the doctor told him to go back to Missouri and find a doctor there.
Bryant says a nurse unhooked him from his IV and monitoring devices, gave him some scrubs to wear and sent him to the waiting room shoeless and sockless to wait for his wife to pick him up.
Bryant claims the UK Hospital violated a federal law that requires hospitals with special capabilities to treat those in need. He seeks actual and punitive damages and is represented by Michael Joshi of Lenexa, Kan.
