Underwater Explosions|May Harass Dolphins

WASHINGTON (CN) - The National Marine Fisheries Service plans to allow the U.S. Air Force to perform Naval Explosive Ordnance Disposal School training operations and other live fire military readiness activities at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida, even though the activities may cause temporary hearing loss in bottlenose dolphins.

The agency has proposed rules to govern the activities in relation to dolphin harassment.

The agency issued annual Incidental Harassment Authorizations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act for similar activities in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008, but the activities have not yet taken place.
