UK Government Changes BBC Charter, Structure

LONDON (AP) — The British government has announced changes for the BBC that alters its board structure and calls for more focus on serving minority audiences.

The new charter described by Culture Secretary John Whittingdale abolishes the BBC Trust oversight group and creates a new board responsible for governing the broadcaster in the public interest.

Some members of the new board will be designated by the government with the rest chosen by the BBC.

It also requires the broadcaster to produce more programming for "under-served" audiences including black and Asian viewers. Whittingdale said Thursday that the BBC should be "the leading broadcaster" in terms ofdiversity.

New policies will require BBC to publish the salary range of employees making over 450,000 pounds ($650,000). Funding for BBC World Service has been maintained.
