U.S. Supreme Court Names New Legal Counsel

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Supreme Court of the United States appointed a Boston lawyer this week to serve as its new legal counsel.

Ethan Torrey had been a partner at Choate Hall & Stewart in Boston, where he specialized in complex business litigation, before coming to the Supreme Court.

Prior to that, Torrey was a litigation associate at Ropes & Gray and a special assistant district attorney in Middlesex County, Mass.

The lawyer also clerked for 3rd Circuit Judge Leonard Garth and U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf in Massachusetts.

Torrey earned his bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992, his master's degree from Columbia University in 1996, and his law degree from Columbia Law School in 1999.

His predecessor, Scott Harris, became clerk of the Supreme Court in September 2013. The new legal counsel will assume his duties on Jan. 6.

The Supreme Court describes its legal office as providing "support to the justices on a variety of case-related issues and legal services for the court as an institution." It was created in 1973.
