LOS ANGELES (CN) - A former U.S. marshal was sentenced Monday to 15 months in federal prison for lying to Los Angeles police after he shot a man to death.
Matthew Itkowitz, 47, now of Suffern, N.Y., shot and killed 26-year-old Ryan Gonzalez in West Hollywood in 2008. A federal jury convicted him of obstructing justice in July.
"Itkowitz falsely characterized an altercation that led to the shooting, and his version of events was contradicted by a video made by a security camera in the alley where the shooting took place," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement Monday.
During trial the judge dropped charges of violating Gonzalez's constitutional rights, and a gun charge. The jury acquitted him of obstructing justice by lying to the U.S. Marshals Service, but convicted him for lying to the LAPD.
