(CN) - More Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, but the overall level of jobless claims remains low, the Labor Department announced Thursday.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, weekly unemployment applications rose by 10,000 to a seasonally adjusted 268,000 in the week that ended June 25.

Unemployment claims have remained below 300,000 for 69 straight weeks the longest such streak since 1973.

The number of Americans receiving unemployment benefits stood at 2.12 million the week ending June 18, down nearly 7 percent from a year earlier.
