Two Sonoma Viticultural Areas Will Be Expanded

WASHINGTON (CN) - The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau of the U.S. Department of the Treasury has expanded Sonoma County, California's Russian River Valley viticultural area, at the request of Gallo Family Vineyards.

The Russian River Valley viticultural area, which lies approximately 50 miles north of San Francisco, is expanded by 14,044 acres, and the Northern Sonoma viticultural area by 44,244 acres, to include all of the Russian River Valley viticultural area. Both are effective Dec. 16.

Gallo had submitted evidence to establish that its land was within the historical Russian River Valley, and that the conditions under which its grapes grow would produce a quality of wine similar to that produced in what was already deemed the Russian River Valley viticultural area. Many existing Russian River Valley vineyard or winery owners opposed the change.

Viticultural areas are established to help consumers identify wine, and measure its quality.
