Two Nominated to San Francisco Federal Court

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Barack Obama nominated Jon Tigar and William Orrick III to serve on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

"I am honored to put forward these highly qualified candidates for the federal bench," Obama said in a statement Tuesday. "They will be distinguished public servants and valuable additions to the United States District Court."

Tigar, 50, graduated from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1989. He graduated from Williams College with his bachelor's in 1984.

After a stint as a law clerk, Tigar worked at Morrison & Foerster from 1990 to 1992. He then served as a public defender in San Francisco from 1993 to 1994, before practicing complex commercial litigation at Keker & Van Nest.

Tigar has been a judge on the Alameda County Superior Court since 2002.

Orrick has worked as a Justice Department deputy assistant attorney general in the civil division since 2010.

Before that, the spent a year as counselor to the assistant attorney general for the civil division. Prior to joining the Department of Justice, Orrick spent 25 years with the San Francisco law firm of Coblentz, Patch, Duffy & Bass. Orrick joined Coblentz as an associate in 1984 and became a partner in 1988.

He graduated from Boston College Law School in 1979 and Yale University in 1976.
