SAN DIEGO (CN) - Two San Diego men pleaded guilty to counterfeiting money by scanning bills onto computers. Each faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Kevin J. Cave, 21, and Erik R. Wallen, 32, pleaded guilty in separate cases this week, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Cave admitted counterfeiting $5, $10 and $20 bills by scanning them into his computer and printing them.
Wallen admitted he counterfeited $100 bills by scanning them into his computer and printing them, then "passed" $31,500 of it through the retail store where he worked.
Cave will be sentenced on Dec. 5, Wallen on Jan. 9, 2010. Wallen's plea agreement also calls for him to pay $31,500 in restitution to the store.
Counterfeiting paper money appears to be easy with modern computers; it's the paper that trips them up. The many, changing inlays, overlays and color tricks in U.S. currency is designed for just this purpose.
