Trump Presses GOP to Trash Filibuster, as He Trashes Corker

President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Friday to press Senate Republicans to trash the filibuster rule, while he stepped up attacks on a former strong GOP ally in the chamber.

WASHINGTON (CN) - President Donald Trump took to Twitter on Friday to press Senate Republicans to trash the filibuster rule, while he stepped up attacks on a former strong GOP ally in the chamber.

Trump's latest barrage of tweets came as a potentially major hurricane bore down on the Texas coast -- the one topic he did address through social media Friday morning.

Instead, he was consumed with the politics of congress and with praising his own administration.

"If Senate Republicans don't get rid of the Filibuster Rule and go to a 51% majority, few bills will be passed. 8 Dems control the Senate!" Trump tweeted.

The filibuster rule has been in the president's Twitter cross-hairs in recent months, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has repeatedly said the Senate won't change the rules.

The president also took aim at Sen. Bob Corker for remarks the Tennessee Republican made last week at a Rotary Club meeting in Chattanooga.

"Strange statement by Bob Corker considering that he is constantly asking me whether or not he should run again in '18. Tennessee not happy!" the president wrote.

Corker had said that Trump lacks the competence to lead and doesn't understand the character of the nation.

"He has not demonstrated that he understands what has made this nation great and what it is today," Corker had said. "And he's got to demonstrate the characteristics of a president who understands that. Without the things I just mentioned happening, our nation is going to go through great peril."

But there were Republicans he did feel charitable toward Friday: Those who work with him in the White House.

"Few, if any, Administrations have done more in just 7 months than the Trump A. Bills passed, regulations killed, border, military, ISIS, SC!" he tweeted.

The tweet came on the heels of two others that heaped praise on Gen. John Kelly's performance as his chief of staff, and one that blasted Senate Republicans for inaction.

The president also extolled author Nick Adams Friday morning for the praise he piled on the Trump administration is his book "Retaking America."

"Nick Adams, "Retaking America" "Best things of this presidency aren't reported about. Convinced this will be perhaps best presidency ever," Trump said.
