Trump Jumps Ahead in ABC/Post Poll

(CN) - Donald Trump woke up Tuesday morning not only to find himself in the lead in the latest ABC News/Washington Post tracking poll, but also learning that he's surged ahead of Hillary Clinton in terms of the relative enthusiasm of their supporters.

Tuesday's poll shows the GOP presidential candidate with the support of 46 percent of likely voters, compated to the Democrat's 45 percent, Libertarian Gary Johnson at 3 percent and the Green Party's Jill Stein at 2 percent.

Last Wednesday, Clinton led Trump in the ABC News/Washington Post poll by 9 points in a four-person race including Johnson and Stein.

The same Oct. 26 poll had Clinton's margin over Trump in a head-to-head race at 8 points.

She still leads Trump in a head-to-head matchup in the latest poll, but only by a single point, the results suggesting that FBI Director James Comey's announcement the agency is scrutinizing Clinton emails recently discovered on a laptop belonging to Huma Abedin could be turning the race upside down in its final days.

Only a week ago Clinton had been seen as cruising to victory on Nov. 8, and the trend in early voting more than 25 million Americans have already cast their vote, according to the United States Election Project seemed to give her the edge.

According to the pollsters, Clinton's overall support following Comey's announcement the FBI is taking a new look at her emails remains relatively stable, but in interviews conducted Saturday and Sunday, the number of survey participants who said they felt "very enthusiastic" about Clinton plummeted.

Prior to Comey's announcement, the relative "strong" enthusiasm for Trump and Clinton was a virtual tie, with 53 percent of Trump supporters saying they were very enthusiastic about their candidate, compared to 51 percent who said the same of Clinton.

However, the latest snapshot of the race from ABC News and The Washington Post shows Trump holding at 53 percent in the "very enthusiastic" category, and Clinton dropping to 43 percent.

By comparison, at this point in the race in 2012, 64 percent of President Barack Obama's supporters said they were very enthusiastic about him, and 61 percent of Republican Mitt Romney's supporters were very enthusiastic about him.

In other polls looking at the national contest, Trump is leading Clinton by 4 points in Tuesday's Los Angeles/USC tracking poll, and the latest Rasmussen Reports poll has the race as a tie.

Clinton leads by 1 point in Tuesday's Investor's Business Daily poll.
