(CN) - Donald Trump, the billionaire real estate developer turned reality television star, has reached the magic number of delegates necessary to clinche the GOP presidential nomination.
The Associated Press on Thursday said Trump was put over the top in its delegate county by a small number of the party's unbound delegates who told the news organization they would support him at the convention.
Republican party rules mandate that a candidate needs 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination. The AP says Trump now has 1,238 delegates. As of Wednesday, most media organizations had the presumptive Republican nominee at 1,208 delegates.
Trump is expected to significantly add to his delegate numbers on June 7 when five states, including California and New Jersey, hold their primaries. A total 303 Republican delegates will be awarded in those contests.
