MIAMI (CN) - The Miccosukee Tribe claims the Army Corps of Engineers is exacerbating threats to 900,000 acres of the Everglades, and the tribe's way of life, by delaying - for 18 years - and preventing a congressionally approved water project. The delays have driven the estimated cost of the project from $82 million to $523 million, the tribe says.
The tribe wants the Corps of Engineers enjoined from building a bridge on the eastern Tamiami Trail until the Modified Water Deliveries Project is completed. The tribe says that could flood tribal businesses on Krome Avenue, which the stalled water projects are designed to prevent. The Miccosukees are represented by Dexter Lehtinen.
