Trial Winds Down in NY Corruption Case

MANHATTAN (CN) - Witness testimony finished in the trial of New York Assemblyman William Boyland, accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from a hospital executive.

U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff found had found former MediSys Health Network CEO David Rosen guilty in September of trying to bribe Boyland, among other schemes, with a consulting job in exchange for $3 million in state funding for MediSys.

During that trial, prosecutors asked Rosen's former secretary a series of questions about Assemblyman Boyland, whose family had connections to multiple MediSys-linked institutions.

The assemblyman's sister, former Brooklyn councilwoman Tracy Boyland, got grants awarded to MediSys. He inherited the office from his father, William Boyland Sr., and his mother, Ruby, worked for Jamaica Hospital.

One email from that trial details Rosen's discussions about writing a check to Tracy's senatorial campaign.

Another shows Rosen's secretary telling her boss that the assemblyman wants to arrange two meetings for him.

"Anything he wants," Rosen replied.

While Rosen was convicted in a bench trial, Boyland opted to try his case in front of a jury.

The last witness, William Collins, in the week-long trial served as counsel to the New York State Assembly and was subpoenaed by the defense to introduce into evidence a list of budget additions that Boyland had recommended.

Trial resumes Tuesday with summations. Boyland, Rosen and six others were indicted in April.
