Travel Agent Is A Bandit, State Says

SANTA ANA, CALIF. (CN) - A travel agent has been arrested on 78 felony counts charging him with stealing more than $160,000 from old people he sold phony "travel packages" to Cuba. Ralph Adam Rendon, 31, targeted church members in his scam, prosecutors said.

Rendon, who is free on $170,000 bail, targeted Jewish and Greek Orthodox church members who wanted to meet co-religionists in Cuba prosecutors said. He allegedly demanded $1,000 deposits for a supposed "Scholarship Foundation," then $2,580, then canceled the trips. Rendon used the stolen money to pay his rent, lease a Mercedes and hire a divorce attorney, according to Attorney General Jerry Brown.
