Transportation Contractor Says He Was Fired For Refusing to Help Cheat on U.S. Drug Test

KANSAS CITY, MO. (CN) - American Directional Boring Co. fired its Manager of the Year for refusing to provide "additional urine" for an employee who said he would fail a random test by the Department of Transportation unless he got some extra clean urine, the manager says.

Todd Buhrman claims the company named him Manager of the Year at its 2007 Christmas party and gave him a pay raise.

Less than two months later, he says, an employee told him he would fail the federal drug test, despite borrowing some "clean" urine from another worker, because the urine-lender had not given him enough of it.

The first driver than "asked Buhrman to provide additional urine," the complaint states.

Buhrman says he refused the request, and reported it to his bosses, as a criminal violation of law and public policy. He says he was promptly fired, and that the "sole and exclusive cause" of his firing was his reporting of the two employees' misconduct.

Buhrman demands reinstatement, lost wages and punitive damages. He is represented in Jackson County Court by Mark Meyer of Lee's Summit.
