Trans Fat Survives in Illinois

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (CN) - The state Senate killed a measure that would ban trans fat in Illinois restaurants.

By 40-13 vote, state senators killed the bill after restaurant owners argued that it would impose another hardship during a difficult economy.

The state House approved the bill by 73-43 vote in April.

The bill would have removed foods containing trans fat, an artery-blocking substance, from restaurant menus by 2013.

School cafeterias would have been exempt, but school vending machines would not. California is the only state to have passed a law banning trans fats.
