WASHINGTON (CN) - The FAA has issued an airworthiness directive for 56 Quest Aircraft Design, LLC Model Kodiak 100 airplanes, regarding loose bolts that could cause engine icing.
Five instances in which a loose bolt on an engine bypass door in the air inlet system of this bush plane were reported to the Federal Aviation Administration, prompting the directive. The loose bolt may cause the bypass door to stick, resulting in icing in the engine air inlet, which could bring down the plane, according to the FAA's directive.
Owners or operators of certain Kodiak 100s must inspect the torque in these bolts; correct the torque, if necessary; replace the bolts with new ones within a certain time; and install safety wire around the new bolts.
Quest Kodiaks were developed for humanitarian missions in which landing conditions are difficult, and may be made amphibious, according to the company Web site.
