Tortilla Maker Accused of Dirty Operations

CHICAGO (CN) - The government wants Del Rey Tortilleria to stop making soft-shell tacos until the company meets FDA health regulations. The tortilla-maker's products have been linked to several outbreaks of gastrointestinal illness in school children, the United States claims in Federal Court.

FDA inspectors allegedly found Del Rey in violation of regulations for storing toxic chemicals near raw food, using paint buckets as food containers, and failing to keep its warehouse and processing areas free from grease, dirt, pests and sewage.

U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald says Del Rey should be enjoined from making and selling soft-shell tacos until it cleans up its act.
