ST. LOUIS (CN) - TJX Companies will pay a total of $9.75 million to 41 states to settle suits over illegal breaches in TJX's database in 2006. The Massachusetts-based company agreed to pay a $5.5 million settlement, $1.75 million for legal costs and $2.5 million to establish a fund that states can use to improve data-security technology.
The Illinois Attorney General's Office will get more than $440,000 from the settlement, and the Missouri Attorney General's Office will get more than $67,000.
TJX also agreed to better protect its customers' credit card data as part of the settlement. TJX already spent millions of dollars to improve its data security and has cooperated fully with investigators in response to the 2006 hacking, the company said in a statement.
TJX owns TJ Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods.
