WASHINGTON (CN) - Tax-payers owing Uncle Sam non-tax debt no longer will be able to run out the 10 year time limitation for the collection of such debt through centralized offsets from tax payer refunds.
The Treasury, which runs the centralized payments program, now will collect on tax-payer debts no matter how old the debt is.
The change, enacted as part of the Food, Conservation and Energy Act of 2008, will cover such debts as delinquent child-support payments student-loan balances and regulatory fines.
Time limitations on tax debt are not affected by this change.
