Thieving Employee Must Pay Insurer $844,500

(CN) - An insurance company is entitled to a default judgment of more than $844,500 from a former Harris Connect employee who paid false refunds to her credit card.

In his ruling, U.S. District Judge Raymond Jackson said there was no dispute about the facts of the case.

Margaret Wallace, a former customer service representative at fundraising and research company Harris Connect, used her position to steal $844,552.70 from her employer, and the plaintiff in this case, Federal Insurance Company, reimbursed the company for its loses.

On March 10, 2014, Wallace was found guilty of 35 counts of embezzlement, and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Federal Insurance said Wallace concocted the scheme to defraud her employer of the money, and she should be liable for paying it back. Wallace did not file an answer to the complaint, and a default judgment was levied against her.

Last week the court revisited the matter, ordering Wallace to be transported from jail to attend the hearing. The judgment was entered after Wallace conceded she simply disregarded the insurance company's complaint and said she did not object to the default ruling.
