Thief of Military Fuel Sentenced to Prison

(CN) - The owner of an Oklahoma trucking company was sentenced to prison for stealing military jet fuel for 6 years that he was supposed to take to military bases, federal prosecutors said.

Doyle Latimer, 55, of Elgin, Okla., was sentenced Friday to 1 year in federal prison. His wife, Cynthia Latimer, 57, was sentenced to 2 years of probation.

U.S. District Judge David L. Russell, in Oklahoma City, also ordered them to pay more than $109,000 in restitution.

Uncle Sam hired Latimer's company, Latimer Trucking LLC, to transport JP-8 jet fuel from depots in Oklahoma City and Wynnewood, Okla., to Altus, Tinker and Sheppard Air Force Bases, in Texas and Oklahoma. His wife served was the company bookkeeper.

Both pleaded guilty in May to one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States.

Latimer admitted that from 2001 through 2007, he stole fuel by draining it from the tankers and using it to operate his trucks. He admitted that he knew his wife was creating false fuel receipts to cover it up.

Cynthia Latimer admitted preparing the false fuel receipts, which appeared to document legitimate diesel fuel purchases for company trucks when in fact there had been no purchase of diesel fuel.

Prosecutors say the Latimers were able to reduce the costs of their daily trucking operation with the thefts.
