WASHINGTON (CN) - Acting on a 1991 petition from the International Council for Bird Preservation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service proposes to list four Peruvian and two Bolivian bird species under the Endangered Species Act.
The agency had determined in 1991 that the birds warranted listing but that it was precluded by higher priority listing actions.
The six species of birds are the ash-breasted tit-tyrant, the Junin grebe, the Junin rail, the Peruvian plantcutter, the royal cinclodes and the white-browed tit-spinetail.
The six species are threatened by the intrusion of human activity in their habitats. Wide-spread slash-and-burn agriculture has removed the trees where the birds nest and contributes to local climate changes that further alter the birds' habitat, according to the USFWS.
