The Game Is Up for Aerospace Embezzler

LOS ANGELES (CN) - A former director of finance and accounting for Gulfstream Aerospace was sentenced Monday to 11 years in federal prison for embezzling $10 million from the company.

It took 13 years for Marvin Jay Caukin, 66, of Calabasas, to swipe the money as he worked for Gulfstream in Long Beach. U.S. District Judge John Walter also ordered him to pay $10.25 million in restitution, and to forfeit his interest in $2.4 million properties in Calabasas and Toluca Lake.

Caukin pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to commit mail fraud. He admitted he submitted fraudulent invoices to Gulfstream from bogus companies set up by his relatives and cohorts, which had names similar to real aerospace companies.

Gulfstream fired him in 2013 for failing to disclose a previous embezzlement conviction, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Prosecutors said in a sentencing statement that Caukin "proved that short prison sentences do not deter him when he resumed embezzling just after being released from a combined 39-month sentence" for his previous convictions.

They said that from 1994 until 2013, "the only years defendant was not continually committing fraud were those in which he was incarcerated."
