Texas County Will Pay Brothers $1.7 Million

HOUSTON (CN) - Harris County officials cut short a federal civil trial and agreed to pay two brothers $1.7 million in damages after sheriff's deputies wrongfully arrested them on charges of resisting arrest and destroyed film in their camera when they saw the brothers taking pictures of their drug raid of a neighbor's home.

The Jan. 4, 2002 incident that spawned Sean and Erik Ibarra's lawsuit spun out of control when undercover agents, worried that their faces were being captured on film, saw one of them taking pictures from his property across the street, and stormed the Ibarras' home with weapons drawn, then arrested them.

The brothers demanded $5 million in damages after the Harris County sheriff's and district attorney's offices failed to investigate the deputies' actions.
